Aladdin the Sun Conure Parrot

This article was written by one of our website guests, if you have a quick article about your parrot and would like to have it put up on our site, send it to us along with a photo from our contact page

My name is Sam, and I am a Sun Conure Parrot owner, and my bird’s name is Aladdin. I bought Aladdin from a local exotic bird show about two years ago, and he was only three weeks old. Before Aladdin, I had some experience with birds. I actually bred and kept pigeons as a hobby years ago.

When I first got Aladdin, he was still a baby. I was feeding him his special formula four times a day for two months. It was a little hard for me, because I had a full time job as a staff engineer at a local company. I remember I had to use my lunch break everyday to come home and feed Aladdin, or swing by the house quickly if I were driving around until he was fully weaned.

Honestly, I have never owned a parrot before, and there is a huge difference between pigeons and parrots, so everything I had learned from pigeons was useless. In general, parrots, and especially Conures, have a strong, distinguished personality. Aladdin is like that. This little hundred gram creature has the personality of a five year old child. Since Aladdin grew up with me, I was the only person that he could trust. Aladdin is very attached to me, and that is why he screams at the top of his tiny lungs every time I leave him. He is actually so smart that he can recognize if my voice in the house, and once he hears it, then he starts screaming and screeching.

From my experience with Aladdin, I think parrots have a combination of different animal personalities, such as:

  • Horses: stubborn and intelligent.
  • Dogs:  human companionship, love to eat people food, territorial and protective.
  • Cats: self care, they wash and groom themselves.

Anyway, I think having a parrot as a pet is a big commitment. I suggest to do some research before you decide to own a parrot. Remember, if you want a pet that does not fly, get a puppy.
